Eight artists risk an experiment: in the framework of the Wilder Raum project they use the Kunstraum Niederoesterreich, which is primarily defined as a gallery, as a venue for artistic work and communication in order to scrutinise the current gallery concept.
Working together for the first time, the participants were interested in the development of art works, the possibilities of exhibiting and the attempt to make artistic decision-making processes understandable – mainly invisible processes that in this way are to be brought back into the gallery and raised for discussion. Here the Kunstraum Niederoesterreich plays an essential role: on the one hand as an institution that is open to the experimental. But also, however, as a place of activity that has emancipated itself from the pure gallery and facilitates the development of new connections through empty space. The title Wilder Raum [wild space], borrowed from a remark by the artist Eva Hesse, relates to this active pushing of the space into the foreground and thereby refers to its fundamental characteristic for the project. In a series of works from the 1960s, Eva Hesse described the place of the interplay of broken down graphic forms with the white sheet of paper as “wild space”.
Thus the Kunstraum becomes a decisive field of work; it is wild, because it no longer encloses and stores and discreetly recedes into the background, but aesthetically rebels.
